TEXAS – Jaxson Crossland, from Celeste, Texas, took home first place in the kids category of the 2020 USA Mullet Championship.

With over 5,300 votes putting him over the top, “Hot Rod Jax,” as his family calls him, used the support of his hometown to beat out over 100 kids from across the country. His mother, Zoie Crossland. said the amount of competitors had no effect on the champ's confidence.

"From the minute he knew he entered he was like, 'When do I get my 500 dollars? When do I win?'" she said. “It was nice to know as parents the confidence he had in it."

While his mom was drawn to Jax's curls from the beginning, her husband, Trent, wasn't a fan. He’d shave the curls at first, but the two would eventually reach a compromise with a cowboy-style haircut.

The hair eventually grew to the mullet we see today. When Jax was old enough, he started asking the barber for his signature cut himself.

"I think it's because every time we'd go I'd say 'Don't touch his curls!' When he got old enough to tell them what he wanted he'd tell them 'Don't touch my curls,' so the mullet is what it became," Zoie Crossland said.

Jax won new hair care products and $500 from the contest. He used the money on boxing gloves and gear for lessons. He says he wants to be just like one of his idols from YouTube, Jake Paul.
