BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — Officer shootings of civilians are up in Bexar County in 2020 over this time the year prior, and the county has the second highest number of such shootings in Texas over the past four years.

That’s just some of what can be gleaned by reviewing a recent report created by the nonprofit Texas Justice Initiative, which compiled data submitted to the Texas Attorney General’s Office.

As of September 1, 15 citizens have been shot by police in Bexar County, 52 percent of them fatally. Ninety-three percent of those citizens are male. Fifty-five percent of those shot are Hispanic, 22 percent are white, 19 percent are Black, and 4 percent are listed as “other.”

Four additional police shootings have occurred in the county since the data was published, bringing the total to 19. There were 20 civilians shot by police in all of 2019.

There were two peace officers shot in Bexar County in 2020. Both survived.

Since 2015, there have been 91 civilians shot by police in Bexar County, 52 percent of whom were shot fatally. That’s not including the four most recent shootings in 2020.

In the same time period, 16 peace officers have been shot in the county, 12 percent of them fatally.

So far in 2020, 23 civilian deaths in Bexar County have occurred in custody, which is up over a total of 22 in 2019.
