"My grandmother was an extraordinary woman," said Kipp. "She had such a beautiful heart and was always so thoughtful of other people. She pretty much raised me."

However, her relationship with her mom was rocky.

"She felt a lot of heartache and loss in her life," said Kipp. "There was a lot of mental health issues there."

At the age of 19, Kipp moved out of her family home.

"There was a lot of hurt feelings and unforgiveness that I held onto for so long," said Kipp. "And it wasn't until my grandmother was first diagnosed with cancer and had to go into the hospital. My mom had to come live with my family and I."

One night, the relationship between Kipp and her mom changed.

"Somebody who has dementia, they don't want to take direction, they don't want to bathe, it's very, very hard," said Kipp. "And so, I yelled at her and told her to get in bath. I had to bathe my mom for the first time."

In that venerable moment, Kipp realized something.

"I can't explain how hard and beautiful it was at the same time," said Kipp. “I remember that next night, I went outside and stay with her and I asked her to forgive me and said I'm not leaving you. I'm going to be here till the very end."

Kipp is not just a daughter, but a mom to two girls, whom she says are resilient.

"They have actually seen a lot that most kids have not seen," said Kipp. "They have been in and out of nursing homes and hospitals and have seen a lot of sick people."

This Mother's Day, the girls are making cards for their “Mimi” and driving by in a Mother's Day parade at her nursing home.

"With my mom being in a nursing home during COVID, it's been exceptional hard," said Kipp. "It was a hard pill to swallow to not be able to see her every day and be there for her."

Despite the emotional strain, Kipp still recognizes the good in this holiday.

"This year, I really just want to be present with my kids and family," said Kipp. "My girls are my joy. I look at them and am just so thankful to be their mom."
