NATIONWIDE – Since self-isolation measures were put in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, restaurants have been forced to close dining areas but many are still offering takeout and delivery options. Some consumers might be asking though, how safe is it really?

According to the Institute for Food Safety at Cornell University, yes, it is safe to order takeout.

In a post on their website answering that question, University officials explain that restaurants all over are required to not only need local health department standards, they must adhere to safe food practices put in place by the Food and Drug Administration.

The post goes on to explain that as of now there is no evidence showing that the novel coronavirus is spread through food.

It adds if you’re concerned about getting transmission from surfaces like restaurant counters or food take-out bags, here are a few things you can do:

  • Maintain social distance (at least six feet) when you pick up the food. Avoid touching your face.
  • Wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap and water as soon as you arrive at your home.
  • Remove the food from the takeout bag/package/container and dispose of or recycle them appropriately. Wash your hands again.
  • Wash your hands frequently before handling food, while preparing food, and before consuming food.
