SAN ANTONIO -- Nickaylah Sampson takes on a lot during her day. Sometimes it involves waking up before 5 a.m. and not going to sleep until midnight.
- A swimmer and runs cross country for the Knights
- Wants to follow in her father's military footsteps
“You have to tell yourself to go practice because you want to get better,” Sampson said.
The senior at Steele High School is not only a swimmer but runs cross country for the Knights as well.
“It’s kind of like a thing to race someone next to you and that’s how you get better,” Sampson said. “The fact you want to get better is how you find the determination to push yourself.”
Sampson has that determination to be great in everything she does. She keeps a GPA of almost 100 and scored a 1270 on her SAT. Sampson is also involved in the National Honor Society, Key Club and numerous volunteer organizations.
“There’s something that feels so good doing something for others,” Sampson said. “To see the smile on their faces and to give them something, it makes you feel really good.”
Sampson not only likes to help those in the community--she wants to help her country. She plans to attend West Point for college and have a career in the military.
“I want to do a 20-year career like my dad, he’s a big inspiration for me.” Sampson said. “He’s been able to provide for our family because of the military and I have to give back to my country and my father.”
