SAN ANTONIO -- It was back on October 2 when county commissioners named Bexar County Sheriff's Office veteran Leticia Vasquez as the new constable for Precinct 2. She has only physically been in her office for nine days, but she's already making some pretty big changes - from safety to promotions, even what the uniform could look like.

  • Leticia Vasquez appoint Precinct 2 constable on October 2
  • Focused on positive change and community outreach
  • Will meet with Precinct 2 residents on October 26

Spectrum News caught up with her as she and her newly appointed chief deputy, Leo Horton, were getting the office ready for a first meet-and-greet reception with family and community members.

Within days she changed up the break room, training room, and put up new flags in the hallway to honor our United States military. However, when it comes to changes, office decor isn't the only thing she's set her mind on.

"I just swore in my deputy chief, Lou Antu," she said.

Antu is another longtime sheriff's office veteran.

While she admits there is still some learning to do on the administrative side, she knows the law enforcement side and is already helping the dozen or so deputies on patrol as they go out to serve civil papers.

"I asked them, 'What are you doing? Are you going to the address or are you doing any kind of research?' And they said they weren't doing any research. So I showed them how to get onto the computer and punch up that address, and if there were any priors, they would be able to see. If there were any warrants there, they would be able to see. They had no idea how to do that on the computer," she said.

She says it's been a smooth transition so far, but the one group she wants to be sure has faith in her are the people of Precinct 2.

"I want them to get to know me. Anything that's coming up to the door - usually the chief or the deputy chief handles it - I'm actually walking out there so they can see that I want to get involved," Vasquez said.

In maybe even the next week or so when people see her and the deputies out and about, they could have a new addition to their uniform. Vasquez showed us her new design plans for a patch for Precinct 2.
