AUSTIN, Texas -- Since lawmakers legalized hemp, state agencies have been making some adjustments, including the Texas Department of State Health Services.

  • Public hearing at 1 p.m.
  • Includes idea of CBD
  • Random testing for products

Aside from keeping track of flu or measles cases throughout the state, the department is also responsible for regulating what Texans consume.

That now includes hemp products, as of May.

On Thursday, the agency will hold a public hearing on what people want considered when permitting the manufacture of hemp products. That includes CBD.

Under the new law, once known as House Bill 1325, the state health department is required to establish a licensing program, and a registration process for retailers selling consumable hemp products--including those that contain CBD. It also includes food, drugs, devices and cosmetics.

The DSHS is also required to work with the Department of Public Safety on random testing for those products, to make sure they contain less than .3 percent THC--the psychoactive compound in marijuana.

The hearing starts at 1 p.m. at the State Health Department's headquarters on 49th Street.
