SAN ANTONIO – Monday is the first day back to school for San Antonio ISD, and one school is kicking off the beginning of the year off with a special anniversary.
James Bonham Academy on St. Mary’s Street is celebrating 130 years. The school’s principal took to Twitter Sunday to announce the exciting milestone.
Despite its age, the school is still experiencing firsts. Last week, the school hosted its first ever kindergarten camp and nearly 70 students participated.
According to SAISD’s website, the school was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and was named after an American soldier who died at the Battle of the Alamo. Bonham was also a second cousin to William B. Travis.
Bonham Academy is now one of the districts choice schools. It serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade and specializes in fine arts, environmental sciences, and English and Spanish dual language.
