SAN ANTONIO — He doesn’t play for the Spurs, so why is DeMarcus Cousins wearing a Spurs jersey on a billboard?

  • Shows DeMarcus Cousins photoshopped in Spurs jersey
  • Unclear who paid for the billboard
  • Cousins is currently a free agent

Mystery fans are campaigning for more star power on the team. A digital billboard off Interstate 35 between San Marcos and Kyle features a photoshopped image of Cousins in a silver and black jersey, surrounded by the words “boot scootin’ boogie.” The Brooks and Dunn reference is a play on the free agent’s nickname, Boogie.

When advertising agency Arrowhead Outdoors posted a photo of the billboard to their Instagram account, fans immediately began demanding to know its location. It’s one of many digital ads that rotate through the billboard, so it’s easy to miss.

The agency’s phone number also appears on the billboard, but it is unclear who paid for the ad. Spectrum news reached out to Arrowhead Outdoors and has not heard back.

As Kawhi Leonard’s free agency decision continues to dominate the headlines, it’s possible Spurs fans just need a distraction.

Cousins is also known for his dramatics and tendency to fight with coaches and teammates, so many people in San Antonio don’t think he’s a good match for the Spurs. He also spent much of last season rehabbing an Achilles injury while under a one-year contract with Golden State.

Excitement around this rumor really blew up on Wednesday, when The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that DeMar DeRozan has been in “direct contact” with Boogie.

Cousins hasn't commented publicly on the billboard or his free agency preferences.

The Spurs don’t have enough cap space left to sign Cousins, unless he’s willing to take a huge pay cut.
