SAN ANTONIO — SeaWorld San Antonio is celebrating the birth of a sea lion pup.
- Birth is the first of the season
- Expecting more pups soon
- Mom and pup are in good health
Rachel, a four-year-old California sea lion, delivered her first pup on June 18. This is the first birth of the 2019 pupping season. SeaWorld is expecting more sea lion births in the coming months.
Animal care specialists said the new mother and pup appear to be in good health. They expressed cautious optimism about the newborn sea lion and said the first few days and weeks in its life are crucial to long-term survival. The yet to be named pup will nurse from five months to a year before graduating to a solid diet of fish.
Guests to the park can see the newborn pup nursing and interacting with its mother at the park’s Pacific Point Preserve habitat.
