SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio man accused of vandalizing a North Side church over the weekend has been charged and arrested.

  • One man charged and arrested
  • Church member caught vandal in act
  • Mayor Nirenberg and Brockhouse condemn the behavior

Mark Garrett is facing felony graffiti charges. San Antonio police say Garrett was going after Councilman and Mayoral Candidate Greg Brockhouse when he spraypainted the side of Huisache Avenue Baptist Church.

The pastor said a church member caught Garrett in the act after Sunday services. The graffiti on the wall has since been painted over.

“We are conservative politically, so we would go for whatever candidate falls on the conservative side of issues. I don’t get into politics,” said Bez Cummings, the church’s senior pastor.

“This graffiti matches the vandalism at the Fire Hall and the tagging on over 100 of my big signs in the same corridor,” said Councilman Brockhouse. “This wasn’t random and the damages are in the thousands of dollars. It was planned and ongoing for some time and it has no place in our politics.”

"This kind of behavior from either side has no place in this or any other campaign,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “I’m glad that one of the perpetrators was caught and hope that will serve as an example to anyone else considering this type of illegal behavior.”
