SAN ANTONIO -- The City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture, in partnership with the City’s Office of Military and Veterans Affairs, presents “City of Service,” a new exhibit celebrating the history and legacy of San Antonio’s military service members and bases.

The exhibit opens on May 23 and runs through September 13 at the City of San Antonio’s Culture Commons Gallery.
“City of Service” features 34 two-dimensional works by a group of 19 San Antonio-based artists, some of whom are military veterans. Subjects of the artwork include: Women's Army Corps, Edgewood ISD students who served in the Vietnam War, San Antonio's military bases, veteran homelessness and more.
“San Antonio has a long and notable military history,” City of San Antonio Office of Military and Veteran Affairs Director Maj. Gen. Juan G. Ayala, USMC (Ret.) said. “Even today, the undeniable influence of the U.S. military in our community is interwoven into our everyday lives. It’s a part of who we are as a city and this exhibit highlights that legacy.”
Three accompanying events will take place throughout the duration of the exhibit. The events are free and open to the public and will take place at Culture Commons Gallery.

“There are many stories to be told about the military’s legacy and influence in our city,” Director of the Department of Arts & Culture Debbie Racca-Sittre said. “Through the art featured in this exhibit, and the engagement with the community through these events, we hope residents and visitors will learn more about and truly appreciate why San Antonio is Military City, USA.”
The Culture Commons Gallery is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
