SAN ANTONIO — A Bexar County Jail inmate was found unresponsive in his cell Thursday morning.

  • Sheriff believes man should not have been jailed
  • Inmate had been in jail since April 4
  • Appears to be no foul play

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and medical staff performed life-saving measures on 63-year-old Jack Michael Ule. But Ule was pronounced dead at 8:40 a.m.

Ule had been in jail since April 4 on a $500 bond, for a Class B misdemeanor for trespassing on private property.

“In my opinion, this inmate should not have been in jail,” said Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar. “The Adult Detention Center should not be used to house the mentally ill or those who simply cannot afford to pay their way out. I will continue to work with District Attorney Joe Gonzales and Judge Nelson Wolff on a long-term fix.”

Officials say it appears ongoing health issues contributed to Ule’s death. But the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office will make the final determination. There didn’t appear to be any foul play involved.
