Police say a 26-year-old woman was acting suspicious. When the sergeant confronted her, she reached for an Uzi. The officer fired multiple shots at her. She died at the scene.

An Uzi is not legal to purchase in the U.S.

With news of this recent officer-involved shooting, we are taking a closer look at how many have happened this year. The first two officer-involved shootings of 2019 happened within the first three days of the new year, and on March 4, SAPD responded to two in one day.

We compared these six to the number of officer involved shootings in years past for the particular time frame of January to March 21.

In 2018 there were two, one in 2017, and three in 2016.

The sergeant involved in Wednesday's shooting is a 23-year veteran of the force and is on desk duty while this is being investigated.

Police haven't released the identity of the suspect yet.

City Attorney Andy Segovia sent us a statement regarding SAPD training and how they respond to officer-involved shootings:

"The San Antonio Police Department's Training Academy has been recognized by the Department of Justice as a national model and consistently exceeds state licensing requirements. SAPD continually reviews evolving best practices and makes adjustments to its training as necessary. We support the training program for our officers and recognize they face situations every day that require split-second decisions."
