LIVE OAK, Texas — Drive up Interstate 35 and Loop 1604 towards Live Oak and you’ll notice a huge transformation taking place just for IKEA.

As the Swedish retailer gets ready for next month’s groundbreaking, heaving machinery has already cleared the busy corner making room for the new furniture megastore.

“On both sides of I-35, at this location, Live Oak is just booming,” said Live Oak City Manager Scott Wayman.

Wayman gave us a sneak peek, where IKEA will erect its newest blue and yellow megastore — set to open in the summer of 2019.

“We have had a lot of luck with our surroundings cities. Selma’s brought in some major wins. Schertz’s brought in major wins. It’s just Live Oak’s time,” said Wayman.

It’s a big score for Live Oak. The store will near a whopping 290,000 square feet in size, built on 800,000 square feet of retail space.

The big development plans to attract everything from restaurants to hotels, and bring in hundreds of new jobs.

“Northeast Lakeview College, and a lot of the students from that college will work in these shopping malls to kind of getting themselves started in life. We’re looking at this entire region, everything from Selma to Schertz for drawing in employees in the area to come work in our city,” said Wayman.

During construction, the world’s largest furniture retailer will create about 500 jobs, and is expected to fill about 250 new employees when the store opens.
