DALLAS — A month ago the Dallas Zoo welcomed two new “purfect” members of its family, and now the tiger cubs have names.

The tiger cubs born on Dec. 6 are named Nety and Rudi. The cubs are named after conservation activists, working to save critically endangered Sumatran tigers in their natural habitat.

Nety, the female cub, is named after Nety Riana Sari, a conservationist who works with World Wildlife Fund’s Thirty Hills project. The project restores deforested areas of the land in Sumatra, while also setting aside some land for local communities to generate income. The zoo supports Thirty Hills through its Protecting the 12 conservation initiative.

The male cub Rudi is named in honor of Rudi Putra, National Geographic Fellow and director of the Leuser Conservation Forum. Putra and the LCF have been fighting to protect an expanse of rainforest that is one of the last remaining intact rainforests in all of Indonesia, and the last place on Earth where wild rhinos, elephants, tigers and orangutans still coexist.
