Luis Garcia joined Spectrum News 1 in November 2020.

Garcia pursued journalism because he always loved to share the unheard stories of change makers in the community.

He has lived in the area his entire life, born in El Paso and spending part of his youth in nearby Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. He returned to the States about 10 years ago, and loves living in Texas. Between the open natural landscapes and modern cities, Garcia is also able to find the warmth of an authentic Mexican home which is important to him while he is raising his daughter. While he believes the best tacos are in Ciudad Juarez, he really enjoys a good tamale at an El Paso football game.

Garcia has had success reporting in the area and loves working in one of the largest border communities in the world. He won a 2018 Lone Star Emmy for Program Feature in Health & Science for his piece on veganism (although he is not vegan himself). He also covered the 2019 Wal-Mart shooting in El Paso, which had an enormous impact on him as a reporter. He does remember the somber reporting, but also highlights the power in unity during healing in the community.

When he’s not reporting, Garcia often spends time with his daughter and wife, or playing soccer or guitar. He enjoys traveling to Houston to see his older brother and stopping at Whataburger along the way. If you haven’t heard already, he claims the best kept secret in Texas is the Franklin Mountains where you can see three cities, three states and two countries from the peak.
