  • The senator has called on President Joe Biden to permit media access inside migrant facilities

The convention center is currently being used to house upwards of 2,300 male teen migrants as the surge of border crossings continues.

During a news briefing following the facility tour in Donna on Friday, Cruz again placed blame for the escalating situation on the Biden administration.

“All of us today witnessed the Biden cages. What is occurring here on the border is heartbreaking, and it is a tragedy,” Cruz said. “This is inhumane, it is wrong, and it is the direct consequence of policy decisions by the Biden administration to stop building the wall, to return to catch-and-release, and to end the stay-in-Mexico policy.”

This past weekend, in a letter, Cruz called on the Biden administration to permit media access inside migrant facilities. Cameras weren’t allowed inside the facility in Donna during the GOP tour, and they weren’t permitted inside a facility located in Carrizo Springs, Texas, also on Friday, when Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, led a tour there.

“On Friday, when we held a press conference on the banks of the Rio Grande to explain what we were seeing, journalists from across the country came to report,” Cruz wrote. “Yet not a single one of those cameras, and not a single one of those reporters, was allowed inside the Donna Facility that we toured earlier that day. They could not show the American people what it looks like when a tent city built to house 250 children under COVID restrictions instead houses 4,200.”
