EDMONTON, Alberta —  The last time the Dallas Stars appeared in the Stanley Cup Final they were defending champions and boasted names including Brett Hull, Mike Modano and Ed Belfour.

What You Need To Know

  • With OT win over Las Vegas Monday, Dallas Stars headed to Stanley Cup Final

  • Dallas last appeared in Final back in 2000, losing to New Jersey Devils

  • Stars last won the Stanley Cup in 1999

  • Dallas has been outshot and outscored through much of bubble playoffs

That didn’t work out for Dallas. They were defeated in 2000 by the New Jersey Devils four games to two.

The Stars will get another shot in 2020 after defeating the Vegas Golden Knights in a 3-2 overtime victory Monday night. Dallas was a slight underdog going into the series with Las Vegas, and they’ll likely remain the underdog going into the Final.

The Stars will face either the red-hot Tampa Bay Lightning or the New York Islanders. Tampa Bay can put the Islanders away with a victory Tuesday.

Nothing about the Dallas run has been typical. Dallas was on a six-game losing streak when the regular season came to halt due to the coronavirus pandemic. They’ve largely been outscored during their time in the bubble. The series with the Colorado Avalanche was a grind. Still, they found a way.

“We’re finding ways to win right now, and that’s all that matters,” captain Jamie Benn told the Associated Press.

Dallas trailed 2-0 in the opening seconds of the third period Monday night, and finally got on the board with Benn’s goal midway through the period.

Joel Kiviranta tied the game with 3:47 on the clock. Denis Gurianov scored the game-winner on a power play 3:36 into overtime.

“We’ve done this all year. We’ve come back from behind all year,” interim coach Rick Bowness said. “Down 2-0, there was no panic. We just were a very confident group that we could respond to the challenge.”
