Spectrum News' Valarie D'Elia checks out an earthy addition to Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun in this Travel With Val report.
Since it opened twenty years ago, Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun casino development has faced a problem any property in the hospitality industry would love to have.
"One thing we’ve struggled with is the amount of rooms that we have," said Jeff Hamilton, Assistant GM at Mohegan Sun. "So we have always operated under a 99 percent occupancy since our hotel opened."
Mohegan Sun recently adding a second, smaller hotel called Earth Tower with 400 new rooms augmenting the 1200 larger rooms in Sky tower.
Upping the inventory just might help bring the nightly rate down across the board, which ranges for from $139 to $399 through Dec. 30th.
"Now, midweek you're going to find that prices overall are going to be lower because there are more rooms," Hamilton says. "It used to be every night we were sold out and that demand was driving the price."
The only real inconvenience of booking a room in the Earth tower is guests still have to check in at Sky Tower’s front desk, and walk down a long connecting corridor before reaching the lobby of Earth Tower, which has a front desk, but is limited in services.
With a new spa to open in January, some of the other features of Earth tower include a new cafe and wine bar, a small indoor pool and fitness center as well as an outdoor lounge with fire pits.
