GEORGETOWN, Texas — Georgetown junior catcher Kennedy Miller is trading Texas sunsets for fall leaves in Arkansas to join the Razorbacks.
On a team full of sluggers, Miller stands out. She leads the team in batting average (0.667) and on-base percentage (0.750). Miller also has a strong arm from behind the plate and hopes to take these skills with her to the SEC.
“Being a power hitter helps. Being a catcher, maybe with a strong arm,” Miller said. “I have to trust all of the work I’ve put in outside of games, outside of practices with the team. I trust in that ability.”
Miller never wanted to leave the state for college, but says there’s something special about Fayetteville.
“I grew up living in Texas and was like, I’m not leaving Texas. There’s no way. I fell in love with the coaches, the program, the players. I’m going to be eight hours away from home, but I found my second family,” Miller said. “Them being one of the best programs in the SEC definitely helps.”
The junior was a three-sport athlete before entering high school and was set to also play volleyball her freshman year, but then decided it was time to focus on her passion. She feels that is when her game went to another level.
“I played all the sports. I played volleyball and basketball. I loved both of them. They used to call me the 'Bulldozer' on the basketball court. I don’t know if that says anything or not,” Miller joked.
“My freshman year I was signed up to play softball and volleyball, but two weeks before I was like, ‘OK, never mind, I want to play softball.’ That was kind of the click, that I could go far if I put 100% effort to it," said Miller.
Miller and the Georgetown Eagles are in the midst of the UIL Softball State Championships. The Eagles made it to the regional quarterfinals after beating Medina Valley. They now prepare for a best-of-three matchup with New Braunfels Canyon for a chance to go to the regional semifinals.
Georgetown will face the Canyon Cougars starting Saturday, May 14.
