TEXAS — Republican members of the Texas House are a top target for top GOP leaders in the March primary.
Both Gov. Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton are out for revenge. Abbott wants to defeat fellow Republicans who opposed his push for school vouchers. Paxton is trying to unseat the members who voted to impeach him in May. But that’s meant sometimes the two are not aligned.
That’s the case in the primary battle for several North Texas House seats, including District 67 in Collin County. Incumbent Rep. Jeff Leach is backed by Gov. Abbott. Leach’s challenger, Daren Meis, has Paxton’s support.
In an interview on Capital Tonight, Meis said he’s running because it’s time for a change and said the process the House used to impeach Paxton was a sham.
“There was no sworn testimony. There was quadruple hearsay on the House floor,” he said. “It was a botched process and when you try to circumvent and overthrow the will of more than 4.2 million Texas voters, people aren’t going to sit back and allow that to happen, including myself.”
