TEXAS — The Texas House will take up a private school voucher bill Friday. It's the first time in recent history such a proposal has made it to the House floor.
The bill would create a program to help pay for private school, raise teachers' salaries and boost funding of public schools. Voucher bills have died in the House in recent sessions after Democrats and rural Republicans joined together in opposition. Rural Republicans are expected to lead a charge Friday to strip the education savings account program from the bill.
Gov. Greg Abbott's made the issue his top priority this year and has threatened to continue calling lawmakers back to the Capitol until they pass a bill. He's also said he'll go after Republican opponents of the measure in the upcoming 2024 primaries.
The Senate's already approved its voucher plan.
Corey DeAngelis, a senior fellow at the American Federation for Children, and Monty Exter, a lobbyist with the Association of Texas Professional Educators, joined Capital Tonight's Karina Kling to discuss the issue ahead of Friday's debate. Click the video link above to watch their conversation.
