NATIONWIDE -- Joe Biden’s decision Tuesday to name Kamala Harris as his running mate was hailed by many Democrats and major celebrities on Twitter, while others tried to paint the California senator as a member of the radical left.

Here’s a sampling of tweets from immediately after Biden announced his vice presidential pick:

The Trump campaign was quick to respond to the pick, saying that Senator Harris is "proof that Joe Biden is an empty shell being filled with the extreme agenda of the radicals on the left."

The Trump campaign also released a video that called Harris a “phony” and accused Biden of “embracing the radical left.”

Former President Barack Obama released a statement saying Biden "nailed this decision" and that Harris "is more than prepared for the job."

Former Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee four years ago, said Harris has “already proven herself to be an incredible public servant and leader.”

Susan Rice, a former national security adviser under President Barack Obama whom Biden seriously considered for the pick, released a statement calling Harris a “tenacious and trailblazing leader who will make a great partner on the campaign trail.”

Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota also applauded the decision. Klobuchar, who ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination, was also once considered for the Biden ticket. But she removed her name from consideration and urged Biden to choose a woman of color.

“Kamala is a good friend and incredibly strong public servant,” Klobuchar tweeted. “Sometimes campaigns can tear friendships apart but we grew closer — and I know she has what it takes to lead side-by-side with @JoeBiden.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who also ran against Harris for the Democratic nod, tweeted that the California senator “understands what it takes to stand up for working people, fight for health care for all, and take down the most corrupt administration in history.”

Al Gore, who knows a thing or two about being vice president, called Harris “an extraordinary running mate” and praised her for work on climate and environmental justice.

Former presidential Candidate Tom Steyer called Harris a "fierce advocate for justice and equality."

Several Republicans and prominent conservatives slammed Biden's pick.

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise said that "Just like [Biden], Kamala Harris will say and do anything to please the radical left."

Donald Trump Jr., the president's son, said that "we all know phony Kamala and her radical leftwing friends will be calling all of the shots in a "Biden Administration," not slow Joe!"

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy claimed that Harris' "radical agenda has been terrible for Californians, and it would be terrible for the rest of America too."
