TYLER, Texas — Tim Campbell, brother of legendary running back Earl Campbell, died Sunday at 68 years old after a battle with cancer. Tim was a star on the Texas defensive line from 1975 to 1979.

Tim was one of three brothers to attend the University of Texas, along with his older brother Earl and his twin brother Steve. Before making waves on the Longhorns, the three went 15-0 and won a state championship at John Tyler High School.

The three brothers all played under Darrell Royal, and while Earl was breaking records on offense, Tim was dominating on the defensive line. Tim was a smaller build, but that didn’t stop him from terrorizing opposing quarterbacks. At 5 feet 11 inches tall and 193 pounds, Tim was able to blast by offensive linemen and take down the quarterback for what at the time was an all-time record of 39.5 sacks.

Tim is still No. 2 on the all-time sacks list in Texas Longhorns history, as well as No. 2 in sacks in a single season with 14 in 1977, the same year Earl won the Heisman Trophy.

In 1975, Texas took down Colorado 38-21 in the Bluebonnet Bowl, a game that featured two MVPs for the Campbell family. Earl won the offensive MVP, while Tim came away with the defensive MVP after blocking a punt and returning it for a touchdown.

Tim passed away in his hometown of Tyler, Texas.
