HOUSTON — Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, in true holiday fashion, has gifted the University of Houston’s Law Center with $100,000. The donation flowed through the Texas native’s BeyGOOD, the public charity foundation founded by the singer.

The hefty gift came earlier this month in order to fund the University of Houston Law Center’s Criminal Justice Clinic. The funding will ensure the Criminal Justice Clinic will now be able to hire a director, full-time staff and expand services, according to a release from UHLC.

“The clinic provides a unique and valuable training experience for our students in how to navigate and work within the criminal justice system through client interaction, interviewing, counseling, negotiating, and oral and written advocacy,” said J. Anna Cabot, a clinical associate professor and assistant dean of clinical programs at UHLC, to the University of Houston.

Besides staffing, UHLC says the donation will enhance the clinic’s community outreach efforts that educate and assist the underserved communities surrounding the university, which is nestled in the heart of Houston’s Third Ward.

“I am delighted that the BeyGOOD Foundation has made this very generous gift to the UH Law Center,” said Leonard Baynes, dean of the UH Law Center. “Not only will this funding help establish a full-time criminal justice clinic that provides pro bono legal services in our community, but it will also supercharge our already excellent criminal law and justice programming.”

Knowles-Carter, a Houston native from Third Ward, founded her foundation BeyGOOD in 2013 on a mission to support organizations, institutions and people in transforming their communities into places of well-being, economic prosperity, generosity and justice.

She is set to perform on Christmas Day in Houston at the Texans vs. Baltimore Ravens game at the NRG Stadium. The game will be streamed on Netflix.
