AUSTIN, Texas — Austin Fire Department just after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday reported a train derailment near East Sixth and Robert T Martinez Jr streets in East Austin.

The department said seven cars turned over. Two of them contained gravel and five were empty. There were no hazardous materials being transported.

There was no immediate information on what caused the derailment.

The total train length, the department said, is 90 cars.

One of the cars struck a utility pole, knocking out power in the area. Austin Energy responded and de-energized the downed lines.

It’s estimated that the tracks will be cleared by 5 p.m. Tuesday. People are urged to avoid the area.
