KINNEY COUNTY, Texas — A Texas National Guard soldier was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle a migrant into the U.S.

The soldier, 26-year-old Savion Johnson, was stopped in Kinney County near a Border Patrol checkpoint in Bracketville on March 31, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The Kinney County Sheriff’s Office said the migrant fled the vehicle once Johnson was stopped, but law enforcement eventually caught them. They were handed over to Border Patrol.

If convicted, Johnson could face a minimum 10-year prison sentence.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said that Johnson was charged with evading arrest, smuggling of persons and unlawfully carrying a weapon.

A spokesperson for Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s office told ABC13 Houston that Johnson is a “traitor and criminal” if he is found guilty, and he should face more than the minimum prison sentence.
