AUSTIN, Texas — Former Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo, was recently hired by the City of Austin to oversee the police department in a newly created role, Interim Assistant City Manager.

Jesús Garza, Interim City Manager, is creating the role for Acevedo and said that “I also believe it is essential to have a City Management-level resource identified who is dedicated solely to APD. To that end, I am adding an Interim Assistant City Manager position who will report directly to me. I am pleased to announce that former Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo, known to many here in the City as well as the community from his tenure as Police Chief for nearly 10 years, will be serving in this position.”

From July 2007 to Dec. 2016, Acevedo was the police chief of Austin before assuming the same role in Houston.

Previously, he acted as the chief of police for both Houston and Miami. Following a lengthy public review, Miami's city council terminated Acevedo's position after a six-month term.

Acevedo recently resigned as the Interim Police Chief of Aurora, Colorado. He resigned from Colorado in order to move back to Texas to be with his family, according to a press release from the Aurora Police Department.

Acevedo’s last day with Aurora Police Department will be Jan. 22.
