TEXAS — Texas remains in the most popular destination in the country for people moving.
U-Haul on Tuesday published its annual growth index, showing that for the third consecutive year, the Lone Star State netted the largest number of movers in one-way U-Haul equipment in 2023.
Florida ranks just behind Texas, followed by Idaho, Washington, Arizona, Colorado and Virginia.
For the fourth consecutive year, California saw what U-Haul called the largest net loss of one-way movers. Other states losing a lot of people are Michigan, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Illinois.
U-Haul said the data is compiled by calculating each state’s net gain or loss of one-way equipment from customer transactions in a calendar year. That includes more than 2.5 million one-way U-Haul truck, trailer and U-Box moving container transactions annually across the U.S. and Canada.
This marks the sixth time in eight years that Texas has topped the ranking. It has ranked no lower than second during the same stretch. DIY movers arriving in Texas, U-Haul said, accounted for 50.4% of all one-way U-Haul traffic in and out of Texas.
