DALLAS — It’s almost that time again for Texans to eat hotdogs the size of their head and take pictures next to Big Tex at the State Fair! Festivities will kick off this Friday, but there are some new rules and safety precautions this year.
The State Fair of Texas is placing a new safety measure in place for minors, according to a statement. After 5 p.m. all minors, age 17 and under, must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or chaperone that is 21 or older.
The parent, guardian or chaperone will be ID’d upon entry and is not allowed to supervise more than six minors at a time.
“Once inside the fairgrounds, the parent, guardian, or chaperone is not required to remain with the minors; however, the State Fair encourages that they stay in communication with each other and be aware of their location on the fairgrounds during their visit,” the State Fair said in a statement.
Another safety procedure being put in place this year might actually help the foot traffic while getting into the fair. Instead of guests walking through metal detectors, the fair is implementing what they call an “open gate system.” This new system will allow for guests to keep their phones in their pockets and their purses strapped to themselves. The detector will actually read through all of it.
“This is the latest and greatest technology when it comes to detection. We’re looking for weapons so this is going to be able to detect any of that as people walk through it,” said Karissa Condoianis, a spokeswoman for The State Fair of Texas.
