DALLAS — The Dallas Stars’ Game 3 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday night was ugly. The behavior of some of the Stars fans in attendance was uglier.
Fans threw debris on the ice. Someone dumped their popcorn on Vegas goaltender Adin Hill.
Stars President and CEO Brad Alberts apologized to the Golden Knights in a message that was shared on social media Wednesday.
“On behalf of the Dallas Stars organization, I would like to apologize to the Vegas Golden Knights and the National Hockey League for the actions of a few of our spectators at last night’s game,” he wrote. “Their actions were unacceptable and put the safety of the players and fans at risk.”
“We take pride in providing the best experience for everyone who enters our arena. The actions of these individuals certainly do not reflect our great city, organization and loyal fan base,” Alberts continued.
Hill, when asked about the popcorn incident, kept his humor, saying, “I guess everything was hitting me tonight.”
Things started badly for the Stars and never got better. Captain Jaime Ben was ejected for cross-checking Vegas captain Mark Stone. Ben has a hearing Wednesday with the NHL Department of Player Safety and it’s highly likely he won’t appear in Game 4.
Dallas forward Max Domi was fined $5,000 for slashing Stone. Domi got a game misconduct with 21 seconds left in the second period against the Knights. After his cross-check against Nicolas Hague, Domi started throwing punches.
The Stars also lost forward Evgenii Dadonov to a lower-body injury in the first period.
Fans in the arena threw water bottles, food and other items on the ice. With extended time needed to clean up the playing surface, officials sent both teams to their locker rooms early for the second intermission with the Knights up 4-0 — and played those last seconds after the intermission before playing the third period.
The Stars are now down 0-3 to Vegas in the Western Conference Final, a hole they likely won’t climb out of. Game 4 is Thursday in Dallas.
