The Rays organization teamed up with the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Pete to celebrate Kahan, who has volunteered at the museum for years.

Spectrum News caught up with her as she practiced for the big pitch, taking place to kick off the Rays-Yankees weekend series.

She revealed it’s the first time she’s ever thrown a pitch.

“The more I do, I practice here, the more I’m better,” she said. “I’m not so old. I did not have time to do it (throw a pitch), but now I’m doing it. And they’re very good players. And I love them."

At the ballpark warmup session, she talked baseball and life, sharing her feelings for the hometown team. She said she has a favorite Rays player on the squad but did not reveal who it is.

Kahan said she’s ready to throw out the first pitch but she did also talk about her past.

“You know my story is a little sad,” she said as she showed her tattoo of a concentration camp identification. “I have a number.”

She survived the Auschwitz death camp during World War II.

According to the national Holocaust Memorial Museum, concentration camp prisoners received number tattoos only at one location: Auschwitz during the Holocaust.

Kahan talked about the awful challenges and family tragedies.

She lost her parents and almost her entire family.

But she also offered hope.

“My secret to living long?” she said, looking upward. “My God.”

The Rays superfan and her family have a hundred reasons to celebrate Friday night, as she tosses her first pitch ever.

She has family coming from across the country.

They’ll be celebrating her birthday, then coming back for more celebrations at the end of May.
