Climatological spring began on Wednesday, and just in typical Texas fashion, all forms of severe weather will be possible through Thursday evening.

Confidence is growing for a life-threatening severe weather outbreak to occur across the South. The Southern Plains, including the portions of Texas, could see widespread damaging winds, large hail and a few strong tornadoes Thursday evening.

What You Need To Know

  • Severe storms will develop from west to east across DFW Thursday afternoon and evening

  • Storms could produce widespread damaging winds, large hail and a few strong tornadoes

  • The severe weather threat ends late Thursday night, with gusty winds to follow on Friday

A strong cold front will move in from the west Thursday afternoon, initiating a line of showers and strong thunderstorms that will race across the state. Behind that front, much cooler weather will arrive, along with an elevated risk for fires across parts of Central and North Texas.

A 'moderate' risk of severe storms

The worst of the severe weather will probably develop Thursday afternoon as a strong upper-level system and cold front move in our direction.

A 'moderate' risk for severe storms is highlighted for Thursday.

We will begin the day warm and moist, with a mix of sun and clouds. At this point the upper-level system will be heading our way, along with a strong surface cold front.

By 2 p.m., the front will start a line of severe storms across western sections of North Texas. These storms will be in the immediate Dallas/Fort Worth area between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. When the line arrives, widespread damaging winds, large hail and a few strong tornadoes will be possible.

The severe weather will end for the region around 9 p.m.

Behind this front, winds will quickly switch direction from the west-northwest, bringing in much cooler air. This new air mass will also be dry with low dew point values. This will provide elevated fire concerns Friday.
