TEXAS — Nearly a week after Texas was blasted by frigid temperatures and freezing rain, thousands of people in Central Texas remain without power Monday morning. Power that was originally predicted to be restored fully by Friday evening is now not expected be back until Sunday, Feb. 12.
According to Austin Energy, more than 95% of its customers have power right now, but its crews are focused on the “most complicated and time-consuming restoration efforts,” to bring back power to all of its customers. The company predicts these efforts will be made difficult this week with the impending high winds and rain.
Austin Energy will prioritize critical loads while also focusing on customers who have been without power the longest. The expected weather this week may cause more damage to already weakened trees and power lines, which not only will slow down the progress of restoration but also cause additional damage.
Families and individuals without power can request overnight lodging by calling 311 or 512-974-2000. The City of Austin is offering emergency shelters with sleeping cots, shower facilities, food and water, shelter for pets and charging stations.
As of Sunday afternoon, more than 30 traffic signals are still out across Austin. Stop signs have been added. School zones should be treated as active.
Anyone who sees electric wires down should call 512-322- 9100. Stay away from the wires and treat them as though they are active. Do not try to remove the trees from the lines yourself. If your power is out, text “OUT” to 287846.
Slow down and move over for utility crews working on the lines. Austin Energy has 450 employees working rotating 12-hour shifts to restore the power. Travis and Williamson County are among seven counties Gov. Abbott has issued a disaster declaration for.
While Austin Water has not been impacted, it is asking its customers to reserve water at this time. If your power is out, Austin Energy asks you to unplug or turn off your appliances to prevent an overloading of the circuits.
Oncor reports that service has been restored for the vast majority of its customers, and that its crews are still working 24/7 in the communities impacted by the outages. As of Monday morning, there are morning than 160 power outages remaining. Anyone with an outage should text “OUT” to 66267.
