TEXAS — According to information released by the National Weather Service on Thursday, the storms that moved through Texas Monday afternoon into evening produced 27 tornadoes across a large swath of the state.
This will likely not be the final tally, however.
This includes six tornadoes in East Texas as well as the 21 twisters that hit Central and North Texas. The tornadoes ranged in power from an EF-1 in Jarrell to what Spectrum News 1 meteorologist Mary Wasson called a “devastating EF-3 in Jacksboro.”
The Jacksboro tornado caused a great deal of destruction, as did one that hit a residential section of Round Rock. The EF-3 tornado that hit Jacksboro had a maximum wind speed of 150 mph. The tornado that tore through Round Rock was an EF-2 with a maximum wind speed of 135 mph.
Some of the other tornadoes confirmed by the NWS include an EF-2 in Elgin with a maximum wind speed of 130 mph, an EF-1 in Kingsbury with a wind speed up to 110 mph, an EF-2 in Grayson County with a maximum wind speed of 130 mph and an EF-1 tornado in Nocona with a maximum wind speed of 110 mph.
An EF-1 that hit Jarrell on Monday struck near the site where 25 years ago, a monstrous EF-5 decimated the Central Texas city.
