PFLUGERVILLE, Texas — Parents of Pflugerville Independent School District are calling on the district to enforce the face mask mandate for the sake of the community.

Father of two, Jeffrey Maass says everything the district does affects people, and enforcing the rules should be simple.

“I find it disingenuous. We get these emails repeatedly that say the 'children's safety is our highest priority. We care about your kids.' But then we find out that the staff aren't allowed to enforce the mask mandate,” said Maass

Maass has two teenage children attending school within the district. One was exposed to COVID-19 during the first week of classes, according to an email from the superintendent.

"From what we can tell, there are no standards for this [mandate]. I mean, we're not even requiring a doctor's note from what we can tell. It's just [students that] don't want to wear a mask,” said Maass

Stephanie Dowbusz, another parent at Pfligerville ISD, says the faculty addressed her daughter for a dress code violation but failed to address other students who didn’t wear masks.

"I feel like this [dress code] isn't even important. You know, my child's outfits are not going to cause a public health crisis. But you're picking on her about that,” said Dowbusz.

Dowbusz believes the district is choosing to follow certain rules without enforcing other ones, a move she calls political and says is putting her children at risk.

We reached out to Pflugerville ISD for a statement to address the claims from concerned parents:

"Protective measures, including the use of face coverings, are highly encouraged for all staff, students and visitors regardless of vaccination status."

At this time, masks will be required for students, staff, and visitors when attending Pflugerville ISD, in accordance with the current Travis County mask order.
