AUSTIN, Texas — Allen West recently announced he was resigning as chairman of the Texas Republican Party and considering to run for another office.
“We’ll wait til a little bit later on until when we have better criteria that we have met and we’ll make the decision when it’s the right time,” West said in an interview on Capital Tonight Monday.
West recently told a radio host it was safe to assume he’s mulling challenging Gov. Greg Abbott, who he’s criticized on multiple occasions. Abbott has already been endorsed by former President Donald Trump, but West said that doesn’t affect his decision to potentially challenge him.
“The thing is that I serve God, country and Texas. I don’t serve President Trump, and so that endorsement means nothing and has no bearing on the decision that I would make. And any disagreement that I would have with an elected official would have to do with constitutionality and issues surrounding that,” he said.
West is a former one-term Florida congressman and retired Army lieutenant colonel who moved to Texas several years ago. He took over the party last summer after unseating incumbent James Dickey. He’ll remain as party chair until July 11.
West recently delivered remarks at a Dallas conference whose organizers have ties to the movement QAnon.
“I think that I have a right to free speech and freedom of expression. The event was called ‘For God and Country’ and that is something I have dedicated my life to,” he said. “I don’t have any ties to conspiracies or whatever. My only tie is to the constitution and that’s what I took an oath to.”
