FREDERICKSBURG, Texas — Fields of poppies steal the show in Fredericksburg.

It's a picture-perfect moment for one couple who drove all the way from Mississippi.

“We just decided to take off and travel with our friends, and this is where we ended up. They’re beautiful. The whole area is beautiful," said Susan White.

But what's missing this year at Wildseed Farms are the bluebonnets. That's usually what attracts tourists like White.

“This year in Gillespie County, the bluebonnets are fairly weak because we did not have October, November, December rains," said Wildseed Farms owner John Thomas.

Thomas started planting wildflowers years ago. It grew into a big business where he harvests seeds for folks to plant on their own. Seeds are custom mixed for people to plant where they live.

Just outside the shop are acres and acres of red corn poppies planted not only for their beauty but also for the special meaning behind the flower.

“We grow this to commemorate the war dead. Its the same poppy you wear on your lapel. We have about four and a half acres of red poppies out here. Our whole farm out here in Fredericksburg is around 217 acres, ” said Thomas.

Even the February cold snap couldn’t keep these poppies down.

“It just delayed blooms about 10 days. We’re catching up quick as you can see, ” said Thomas.

And whatever the weather, nothing will keep Thomas away from these fields of flowers. It's a family business that wouldn’t be possible without the real stars of the show.

“Who doesn’t enjoy coming to work to look at this? I enjoy people enjoying our flowers,” said Thomas.
