FORT WORTH, Texas — Texas families have not only struggled with freezing temperatures but getting basic grocery items has been as big a challenge for some.

Some grocery stores were out of stock of essentials or closed due to power outages for several days.

“Pretty much sold out of everything. No eggs, milk, I mean anything – only certain things you could get,” said Jonny Touchette of White Settlement.

Another issue families in Texas face after the snow storm is a loss of income, making it even harder to get food.

"My husband, he can’t work because he does work outside, (he) does windows and power washing, so there’s nothing for us at all,” shared Touchette.

In an effort to provide families with some relief, the Tarrant Area Food Bank has resumed its food distribution right when it is needed the most.

With the help of the National Guard, the organization is giving people emergency food boxes containing 20 to 25 pounds of food.

For Touchette and Marthers, picking up emergency food boxes means their neighbors will also be covered with the basics to keep going until their situation improves.

“I have a gentleman that has nothing at all, slept in his truck for two nights, so I’m gonna cook for him and he’s gonna deliver it,” said Marthers.

They’re keeping neighbors in mind who are homebound and elderly – who have no one else to care for them.

"I’m helping an 85-year-old woman that had no electricity until last night and her water was trickling,” said Touchette.

The Tarrant Area Food Bank will continue distributing food moving forward and hoping to cover even more families at their new location.

Upcoming distributions will take place on the following dates and locations:

  • Thursday, February 25: Special Distribution Event at Globe Life Field in Arlington- Located in Parking Lot M, near the corner of AT&T Way and Nolan Ryan Expy. Distribution time is from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
