GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — It’s the time of the year for sweet Christmas surprises, and the Grand Prairie Police Department knows how to deliver it well.

With its very own “Santa Cop” and other officers, the department gave deserving Grand Prairie families an unexpected surprise that lit up their faces and hearts.

“This is awesome. I appreciate it. Everybody needs help around here because of the pandemic. We appreciate every help that we could get,” said Tessa Faulk of Grand Prairie.

The effort makes it a magical Christmas as the children saw Santa Cop drive up in his decked-out vintage police car bearing gifts for all.

“I’m glad to see my grandkids happy with their gifts, they’re so excited,” said Faulk.

It’s also a special opportunity for police officers to interact with the community.

“Just a little bit of yule tide cheer and a reminder how much we care about our citizens and put some smiles on children’s faces,” added Grand Prairie Police Chief Daniel Scesney.

They’re reassuring residents they can count on them.

"Being able to be on a list and having the Santa Cop being able to come - we’re truly blessed and we’re grateful,” said Grand Prairie resident Cassie Olivas.

The mission continued until the sun was setting on their gift delivery day, giving many in town hope and joy after it was almost all gone.

“I’m going to Epic water park,” shouted Olivas’ son Elias after receiving his gift.

As a mother Olivas was very grateful and moved by the gesture from the police department.

"It’s been really rough. You know, I lost my dad at the beginning of the year. With COVID and Zoom and everything it’s been a real struggle this year,” she said.

The surprises continued into the night, when they reached another household with excited children waiting to meet Santa Cop.

“I really liked this. It’s a stuffed animal and I recently got a hamster. I’m pretty happy,” said Gloria Sanchez of Grand Prairie, while wishing everyone the same joy she felt this holiday season.

“Merry Christmas, and even though COVID is around, have a good Christmas,” said Sanchez.

For now, Santa Cop is off duty and gone until next year.
