ARLINGTON, Texas — There’s an old saying “grab the bull by the horns.” For Stetson Wright, that’s not a life motto. It’s an occupation and he does so by flawlessly riding bulls for eight seconds at a time.

A night after clinching his second all-around world championship, Stetson Wright returned to make more history in the 2020 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He recorded an 89-point ride to win the bull riding championship at Globe Life Field, Dec. 12.

“You can’t out muscle a bull. But you can dang sure dance with them when you’re loose, cool and in shape,” said Stetson Wright.

In the sport of rodeo, Stetson Wright is a rock star. But he’s not the only famous cowboy in the Wright family. Not even close. He comes from a lineage of rodeo cowboys. His older brothers Ryder and Rusty, his uncles Jesse and Spencer and his father Cody Wright are all saddle bronc riding champions.

“Having this gold belt buckle means everything to me. I’m the only one in my family who’s got the all-around world champion honor,” said Stetson Wright. “My goal is to be the best cowboy that ever lived."

If he truly wants to be the best cowboy who’s ever lived, he’s in the right family. Cody Wright is not only his father, he’s also his coach. When it’s go-time, he crowds around the chutes like a NASCAR pit crew, helping his sons saddle up.

“They don’t need me chirping in their ear, telling them how to do it. They do need me at all to be right honest with you,” said Cody Wright with a smile. “It’s kind of muscle memory for them at this point.”

Stetson Wright and his brothers may not need their dad in the chutes. But they certainly want him there for support.

“I’ve always wanted to grow up just like him and the man that he is. To be a professional cowboy just like he was means everything to me. That’s what I’ve tried to do my whole life,” Stetson Wright said.

At age 21 with the accolades he’s already collected and the natural gift he has for riding bulls and bronc horses, Stetson Wright has already left an impact on the sport of rodeo and his name. It’s safe to say there will be a lot more trophies and golden belt buckles for the entire Wright family.
