AUSTIN, Texas — The Pfizer vaccine is already being distributed around Texas, and it's likely that the Moderna vaccine will receive emergency authorization from the FDA sometime this week. But there’s another vaccine in development, and a facility in Texas is playing a critical role.
The Texas A&M University System Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing has a $265 million federal contract to mass-produce doses of a vaccine candidate being developed by Novavax. It’s still going through clinical trials, but researchers say so far they’ve seen promising results.
Dr. W. Jay Treat, the chief manufacturing officer and principal investigator at the center, says the fact that so many successful vaccines were created so quickly is a huge accomplishment. And it’s a feat that may not have been possible until recently.
“I’ve been in the industry over 30 years,” said Treat in an interview on Capital Tonight. “And if you went back 10 or 15 years ago, maybe even five years ago, I would have said what we’re doing today is impossible.”
