TEXAS — It’s indicative of just how bad COVID-19 has gotten in parts of Texas. Bastrop County – which includes the city of Bastrop, Smithville, part of Elgin, and part of Mustang Ridge – on Tuesday reported a 379% week-over-week increase in virus cases.

The county reported 254 new cases on Tuesday. That’s up from 54 the week prior. That could be attributed to the Thanksgiving holiday, residents getting lax about social distancing measures, or a combination of the two.

According to its dashboard, the county has 345 active cases of the virus and 39 of its residents have died due to it.

Across the state, the trend in case increases remains about the same as in recent weeks. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, on Tuesday there were 15,103 new cases of the virus reported. In addition, there were 181 new fatalities reported.

Texas is now reporting a total 1,272,54 cases of the virus, 1,050,416 recoveries, 203,203 active cases, and 22,808 total fatalities.

If there is light at the end of a long, dark tunnel, it’s that roughly 1.4 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine are due to arrive in Texas by December 14.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday told Spectrum News 1 that during the month of December, more Texans will be vaccinated than have tested positive for the virus and that the state will see a “dramatic decrease” in cases in the coming months.
