SAN ANTONIO – Plenty of voters make up their minds well before they start filling out their ballots, but one San Antonio man is still deciding who he wants to represent him in the Texas House as the representative for District 119.

Quirino “Q” Cardenas isn’t affiliated with a particular party – he’s a veteran, a contractor with the U.S. Department of Defense, and a local plant-based sloppy joe entrepreneur. He hasn't made up his mind when it comes to his vote.

He says he wants to make sure he’s voting for a person, not just a party: “Not only for District 119, but for themselves as well, you know? Are you a good person?"

On Election Day he’ll choose between Democrat Liz Campos and Republican George Garza. Each grew up on the South Side of San Antonio and haven't ventured far from home.

“Grew up on the Southeast Side, so where I live now is actually on the same block as my dad’s house, from where I grew up," said Garza.

“Here for 51 years. I purchased a house across from my mom. I’m very proud of my district, and I want to make a positive change," Campos said.

Garza is a military veteran and barber by trade, who currently works in administration – this is his first foray into politics. Campos, on the other hand, has spent 30 years in the legal profession and has served as a chief of staff for a former representative in Austin. She also owns a plumbing company.

For Cardenas, his focus is on the small picture during an election year that's been swallowed up by one big race.

“It doesn't matter if it's Trump or Biden. They’re not going to fix the pothole. They’re not going to put up the stop light. It’s within the local ballot that a lot of our community fate is decided on,” he said.

While speaking with Spectrum News 1 for this story, Cardenas had a question for the two candidates:

“For a community to thrive, it must have a strong, local, economic infrastructure. Some of the businesses hit the hardest are the local mom-and-pop shops. What do you plan on doing to restore some of that infrastructure, and create more entrepreneurship opportunities for the personnel of District 119?"

Spectrum News 1 took his question to the candidates, here’s Garza’s response:

“Hey, [Cardenas], great question. I will make sure that we can get tax breaks and programs in place that will bring up the small businesses and keep San Antonio moving, keep our community going, help get the health insurance and pay to the employees in our community. Thank you for your question, and hopefully I can count on your vote come Tuesday."

Here is Campos' response:

“Hi, [Cardenas], and thank you for that great question. So, I understand exactly where you’re coming from, because I am a small business owner. So, I want to go to Austin to fight for the people to make sure we get our lives back on track because I’m going to fight for the people. With that, I, Liz Campos, ask for your vote November the third."

Spectrum News 1 showed Cardenas the responses and ask if either swayed his vote. While he wouldn’t say who he’d be voting for, he did say he’d made a decision.

“I think it’s going to 100% decide who I’m going to vote for," said Cardenas.
