Shakari Briggs joined Spectrum News Texas in October 2020 as a digital journalist. Prior to returning to her hometown of Dallas, she worked in Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi. But, she’s thrilled to be back in the city with the best skyline and a state where everything’s bigger and better!

Shakari got her start in the ever-changing journalism industry at The Shreveport Times as a breaking news digital reporter covering deadly officer-involved shootings, hurricanes that impacted thousands, Mardi-Gras — the northwest Louisiana way, and the untimely death of rapper Meek Mill’s protégé Lil’ Snupe among other topics. Throughout the course of her career, Shakari has worked at small to medium-sized newspapers. Most recently she worked as a reporter for The Pine Bluff Commercial where she covered rapidly increasing cases of COVID-19 in a county that was deemed a “hotspot.” Her earlier work at The Commercial as a freelance writer resulted in Associated Press and Arkansas Press Association first-place awards.

In addition to print, Shakari has worked at television stations. She snagged her first job in broadcast as an associate producer at KAIT-TV in Jonesboro, AR. learning the tricks of the trade behind-the-scenes. She’d later go on to work for its sister station, WDAM-TV in Hattiesburg, MS. as a digital content producer/multimedia journalist. While she was there, she did extensive reporting on a compound pharmacy fraud scheme involving multiple federal indictments in which at least 11 people pleaded guilty. Also, her exclusive story of a Mississippi man’s recount of police brutality to the officer’s dismissal from the department drew national attention.

When she’s not on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter or TikTok, she’s at home binge-watching her favorite shows like “The Blacklist,” “The Chi,” “Little Fires Everywhere,” “Snowfall” and “This Is Us” or  cheering on the Dallas Cowboys and Mavericks. You may even spot her at one of the bakeries around the DFW in search of the best red velvet cupcake!  She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the Ida B. Wells Society for Investigative Reporting. Additionally, she is a big sister as part of Big Brothers Big Sisters Mississippi.
