AUSTIN, Texas — There's a statewide race in Texas that could play a huge role in shaping the future of the state.

Republican Jim Wright is facing off against Democrat Chrysta Castañeda for a spot on the Texas Railroad Commission. The title they covet is a little misleading. Railroad commissioners don't actually regulate railroads anymore.

The state agency regulates oil and gas production and there are three commissioners who are elected for statewide, six-year, staggered terms. Both Castañeda and Wright are fighting for Ryan Sitton's spot. He lost to Wright in the Republican Primary in March.

Wright spoke with Capital Tonight anchor Karina Kling about why he’s running, how the commission can help the oil and gas industry bounce back from pandemic lows, and why the political newcomer thinks he’s qualified for the position.
