MESQUITE, Texas — Food banks across the state are continuing to see a greater need for groceries. The North Texas Food Bank has more than doubled the amount of people it serves every week.

  • Food banks under increased pressure to provide groceries to those in need

  • Cummings calls it a calling from God

Grocery distributing hubs like Sharing Life Community Outreach serve thousands of meals via drive-thru food pantries and delivery, which delivers on a case- by-case basis.

Since March, more than 100,000 families have been fed through the grocery food bank. Dozens of volunteers with Sharing Life Community Outreach sort, pack and distribute hundreds of meals daily.

"This is what we do, we volunteer for this," said Army veteran Charles Cummings. "It's a calling."

Cummings volunteers as a delivery driver on a weekly basis. He lost his job in computer technology just weeks after the pandemic began taking a deadly toll.

"It's God using me or any of these people who are doing the deliveries just to make sure his people are cared for," said Cummings.

Cummings and his motherly sidekick, Rae Ferris, have been partnering to provide much-needed relief in the community. The duo volunteers their time and gas to take meals from the distribution center in Mesquite, Texas, to families across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

"Why sit there in front of a TV day in and day out? Why sit at a table in front of your computer when you can get out here and make friends?" said Cummings.

"These are people who really need this; they're not just people who are putting their names in the hat just to get it for free," Cummings continued.

Sharing life Outreach has delivered more than 8,000 meals since the start of the pandemic. The organization also has to utilize services such as Uber and Star Transit in order to meet the growing need for food. To find out more about the nonprofit, you can visit here.
