AUSTIN, Texas — Tuesday's runoff election is a race like no other. Millions of Texans didn't let the COVID-19 pandemic keep them away from the polls, and many statewide races were too close to call late in the evening

Several other congressional seats are up for grabs across Central and South Texas. This is what some of the area races look like as of early Wednesday morning.

In the Democratic runoff for U.S. District 10, Mike Siegel declared the victory over Pritesh Gandhi with 54.3 percent of the vote. The winner will take on Rep. Michael McCaul (R) in November. In 2018, McCaul defeated Siegel with 51 percent of the vote.

In the Republican runoff for U.S. District 23, Raul Reyes and Tony Gonzales are in a deadlock with 50 percent of the vote. About 10 votes separate the two and mail-in ballots are still being counted. The winner of that race will take on Democratic candidate Gina Ortiz Jones in the general election. Both Ortiz Jones and her opponent are vying for Rep. Will Hurd’s (R) seat, who is stepping down. Ortiz Jones lost to Hurd by less than 1000 votes in 2018.

In the Democratic race for the U.S. District 31 Donna Imam won over Christine Eady Mann with 56.6 percent of the vote. Imam will take on Rep. John Carter (R). In 2018, Carter defeated Hegar with 51 percent of the vote.

In addition to the runoff election, there’s a special election in parts of Travis County and Bastrop County for the Texas Senate District 14. Former Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt (D) is in the lead with 49.7 percent of the vote, followed by Eddie Rodriguez (D) with 33.8 percent of the vote and Don Zimmerman (R) with 13 percent of the vote. The seat was vacated by former Sen. Kirk Watson, who left to take a job at the University of Houston.

Travis County will soon have a new District Attorney. Jose Garza defeated incumbent Margaret Moore with 68 percent of the vote. Moore conceded to Garza soon after polls closed.

"I want to thank the voters of Travis County for giving me the opportunity to serve our community over the last three years," Moore said in a statement. "The District Attorney's Office has made significant improvements to ensure police officers are being held accountable, to prioritize the prosecution of sexual assault cases, and establish new diversion programs for first-time offenders. I'm very proud of the progress we have made thus far. Congratulations to my opponent for his victory tonight. I wish him well in the future."

“Over the last year, thousands of people came together to demand radical transformation to our broken criminal justice system,” Garza said. “They know that our system doesn’t have to be broken. Tonight, our movement showed that we have the power to change our community for the better.”

Garza will face Republican Martin Harry in the November election.
