AUSTIN, Texas — Just as the state once again reported record high daily coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, both Austin and San Antonio also continue to see a surge.
The mayors of both cities want more authority to be able to pull back on reopening in order to slow the spread.
While the governor's given them a little leeway with allowing businesses to mandate masks and enact more restrictions on public gatherings of more than 100 people, both said in an interview on Capital Tonight – it's not enough.
"We’ve reached the point where I think we now see the effects of decisions that were made, in hindsight, without data to support them and so we’d certainly like to slow down this reopening,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg of San Antonio. “We definitely want to press on the ability to maintain restrictions, and to also enhance our ability to control this and focus on some of these localized hotspots are out there."
Over the past seven days, Bexar County has seen an average of nearly 400 cases of the coronavirus each day and hospital capacity is considered under high stress.
Mayor Steve Adler says it's similar in Austin and says if the city stays on the current trajectory, in 7 to 10 days hospitals will be overwhelmed.
"I would hope that the governor would give the large metropolitan areas and counties the ability to do solutions that are tailored for them, even if he's not ready to do a statewide policy," Austin Mayor Steve Adler added.
Both mayors are pleading with people to stay home if you can, wear a mask and keep a safe distance.
